The Sacred Way

The Sacred Way was the central path of the Sanctuary of Apollo that connected the entrance of the Sanctuary with the Altar of Chians and its temple.

This path had a ritualistic character since the visitors had to perform a certain ritual while passing, that included a sacrifice on the altar that was located at the highest point of the Sacred Way. Along the path and on both sides, dozens of offerings, platforms, statues and other treasures were found which were gifts from Greek city states and other distinguishing individuals.

The form of the Sacred Way we see today dates back to the Byzantine times when it was rebuilt for the purposes and needs of a settlement that was found on the ancient sanctuary. The base of many of the offerings as well as other architectural parts of earlier buildings are still visible and found in situ.
